Master of Business Administration (MBA): Human Resource Management programme overview

If you wish to forge a successful business career with a focus on human resources, this MBA can help you realise your potential. You will learn to manage complex business challenges, as well as perfecting your people management, and gain one of the most respected degrees in the world.

The RichmondMBA: Human Resource Management is offered on a full-time, 12 or 16 month basis or part-time over two years on a flexible, day-time schedule. Both programmes can be started in September or January.

About the programme

Study one programme, gain two degrees. Richmonduniquely awards a UK and US qualification for all graduates, including MBA students.

All of our MBA students follow the same programme initially, which begins in the first semester with a thorough study of financial management, business economics and explores how to manage both organisations and people. In the second semester you’ll move on to examine the principles of strategic management, how to implement global marketing strategies and conduct business research.

Also, you will have the opportunity to specialise in a human resource topic of your choice. It could be Leading, Mentoring and Coaching or Human Resource Management. Either way, your people management skills will be enhanced considerably, opening up career opportunities.

You’ll then be able to choose a human resource topic for your professional project, with or without an internship.

The MBA faculty team at 51��, which includes both academics and experienced industry professionals, is collaborative and supportive. They practice the latest teaching methods which stimulate critical thinking and creativity and encourage you to explore boundaries in your thinking and actions.

Learning alongside an international cohort of students will also enable you to share fresh perspectives on similar problems and build lasting business networks.

What you will study

This dynamic learning experience is enhanced with visits to leading international businesses and highly qualified guest speakers who share their industry experience and advice with our MBA students.

The programme is distinctive as it combines the best aspects of American business education (relying on a significant amount of case study material) with UK expectations of rigour and process in assessment.

You’ll be assessed through individual and group projects. Assessment includes reports, presentations and competitions, enabling you to develop the skills to master a myriad of situations in the world of business administration and human resource management.

The Business School works closely with the University’s Department of Student Affairs to offer a series of skill-based careers seminars throughout the academic year on both campuses.

Integrated Internship:
Our postgraduate programmes aim specifically to prepare students for careers in related fields and in line with this, all our MBA students may undertake an internship through Careers & Internships Office.

Fall Semester

ECN 7200 Economic Analysis for Managers
This course exposes students to advanced applied microeconomic analysis and global macroeconomics with a management focus. Complex economic choices and decisions of economic agents are investigated within the business context, and the global macroeconomic environment is analysed concerning its multidimensional relevance for corporations.
MGT 7110 Managing Organisations and People
Organisations consist of the people who work within them. The objectives of this course are therefore to raise the student's awareness of the centrality of managing organisations and people to understanding organisational functioning and effectiveness. To show how an understanding of human behaviour via the disciplinary bases of psychology, sociology and anthropology profoundly deepen our analysis of organisations. To demonstrate the core value of an understanding of managing organisations and people to a manager's ability to achieve organisational goals.
MKT 7100 Global Marketing Strategy
This course sets forth principles of strategic marketing management and sets these principles within the framework of theory and practice. Students will gain a broad understanding of resource based theory from a global perspective, including the relevance and role of company resources and competitive strengths in constructing both single business and multi business strategies. Through critical appraisal of the subject, students will become aware of the role and importance of incorporating business ethics, values, and social responsibilities when creating and executing company strategy.

Spring Semester

MGT 7130 Strategic Management
The course explores issues relating to the strategic management of organisations, focusing on strategic analysis and evaluation, long-range planning and policy implementation. The topics covered fall into two broad themes: corporate strategy (‘in which industries should we operate?’) and business strategy (‘how should we compete in those industries?’) The course covers the core strategic analysis models, and uses case studies to analyse the relationship between a firm's internal organisation and the environment in which it operates.
MGT 7160 Business Research
This course discusses the main concepts and techniques involved in the field of business. The course develops four main themes: research in context which puts the student as the researcher and as the user of research; research methodology which deals with the nature and limitations of different philosophies of research design e.g. deductive versus inductive approaches: qualitative versus quantitative approaches and the role of literature: research method which deals with advantages and issues associated with the use of various data collection methods including observation, use of groups, interviewing techniques and questionnaire design. At the end of the class a research proposal for the upcoming dissertation needs to be prepared which deals with issues of planning, literature review, topic selection, access to data, schedules, action plans, writing styles and referencing systems.
FNN 7102 Financial Management
This course is designed to develop the students' ability to manage a company’s finances. Students will analyse and evaluate the financial performance of organisations. This is based on financial statements and market performance indicators. For this, students will be exposed to methodological approaches concerning the preparation and interpretation of financial statements. This is further supported by an in depth investigation of financial theories and their application to actual scenarios requiring financial decision-making.

HRM 7100 Human Resource Management
This course is multi-disciplinary in its combination of aspects of organisational behaviour, social psychology, and motivational psychology. It covers strategic issues in human resource management including how to lead and support organisational change and how to support the firm’s performance. It also provides insights into the practical aspects of HRM including the topics of talent management, recruitment, diversity in organisations, and learning and development. The course prepares students for management roles in an HR function in a variety of organisations.
HRM 7110 Leading, Mentoring, Coaching
This course is designed to develop the students ability to lead, coach and mentor others in a business environment. Students will be enabled to critically reflect and apply the organisational and psychological dimensions of inspiring, empowering and motivating teams. Methods including action learning as well as peer feedback will raise self-awareness and foster students’ personal and professional development.

MGT 7902 Internship
The MBA internship is a full-time work placement within an organization related to the world of business. The internship aims to provide students with a graduate level experiential learning opportunity in which they can develop intellectual, professional and personal skills that will enable them to function well in a culturally diverse working environment in all key job sectors. All internships are supervised by faculty, and all last a minimum of 9 weeks in length and are carried out full time Monday to Thursday/ Friday. Each student will also complete a series of assessments throughout the internship. These assessments have been designed to help the student reflect on the skills they are learning and the benefits gained from the internship experience, and also to help them determine if their current career goals are the correct fit for them.
HRM 7505 Professional HRM Project
This course will provide students with the opportunity of constructing an applied project in the area of business and management. Students will initiate, plan and execute an individually constructed project with a strong emphasis on applied business scenarios/challenges in human resource management. The course will lead to the preparation of a 10,000 word project report.

HRM 7555 Extended Professional HRM Project
This course will provide students with the opportunity of constructing an applied research project in the area of business and management. Students will initiate, plan and execute an individually constructed project. The topic is related to human resource management and is investigated with the use of appropriate research methods. Emphasis is placed on appropriate literature search, and collection and analysis of data. The course will lead to the preparation of a 15,000 word project report.

In terms of following up with the assessment of student learning and consistent with US liberal arts traditions, our classes rely on the system of continuous assessment on a course by course basis and throughout any given semester. This approach often involves the use of term-papers, portfolios of work, quizzes, mid-semester and final exams as well as student presentations and general class discussion. Not every component applies to every course, but most do relate to many of the classes that are offered. Many of our courses involve a site visit or require attendance at a public lecture as well.

Optional Accredited Internship (London or International)
The Internship Programme at Richmondintegrates industry knowledge with real working experience. Students will be challenged to relate course projects to the workplace, make contacts which may prove valuable to their future employment prospects, and gain confidence in their capabilities, creativity and communication skills. Internships are designed to be both demanding and rewarding. The internship will provide an opportunity to better understand the marketplace, using the skills learned on courses in a real-world setting, as students produce an assessed record of their experiences.

A broad education of this kind equips graduates for a wide range of careers internationally, while enabling them to develop specialist expertise in areas of particular interest.

Optional Accredited USA Internship (additional cost)
Students interested in gaining work experience in the USA during their last semester and wishing for help to secure a placement can be linked up to 51��’s partner GCC (Global Career Center).

This organization will offer students comprehensive career training, find them a placement with a hosting company related to their field of studies in the USA and provide all the necessary support to students with their J1 visa application.

This optional internship will incur an additional cost of $3500 (£2600) which will cover: the J1 visa application, site visit and insurance costs ($1820), GCC’s continuous training as well as finding a placement.

The initial cost to start the coaching and training part of the programme is $1,000 and the rest of the fee is only paid once the internship has been confirmed by the host organisation/company and validated by RAIUL’s International Internship Coordinator.

An official certificate of completion will be awarded to every student having successfully completed the programme.
